29th June 2026, Monday Morning Muse - Gold in Them Hills

A pre-dawn mountain landscape in deep indigo and shadow, with a burning golden glow rising behind the hills โ€” like the world's best-kept secret is just about to spill over the ridge. The words "Gold in Them Hills" sit at the top in warm gold lettering, with "Wheely Happy Days" below. It's 4am energy, honestly.

Well, I'm up at 4am and already having a bit of a cry. Not sure if that counts as morning or just a continuation of last night's chaos, but here we are.

Head's full of cotton wool, pain's taking the absolute piss, and honestly, I'm just a right mess of feelings. Proper knackered, bab.

Been on the ropes for a bit, not going to pretty it up. Some weeks the Ellyllons have a field day, and this one's been a proper battering. Crying? Yeah, that's happening. Sometimes that's just what this life chucks at you.

But somewhere in the dark, a song found me.

Gold in Them Hills by Ron Sexsmith. It's the quiet bit at the heart of About Time, which is hands down my favourite film. If you haven't seen it, it's about a lad who finds out on his 21st that the blokes in his family can time travel. But honestly, it's not really about that. It's about noticing stuff. The ordinary, boring, sometimes painful bits that actually make up a life. The normal run of your day, even when it's a bit crap, is still something special if you can just manage to see it.

Richard Curtis, who wrote and directed the film, called it a "profoundly meaningful song." He said that no matter how bad life looks, if you investigate it, there's gold in them hills. "You just may not be noticing," he said.

I noticed tonight.

The song's not telling me to slap on a smile or count my blessings or any of that bollocks. It's not chirpy, it's not fake. It's just honest. Braver, really.

So don't lose faith
Give the world a chance to say
A word or two, my friend
There's no telling how the day might end
And we'll never know until we see
There's gold in them hills

So today I'm going to open my eyes a little wider. Give the ordinary, unremarkable run of the day a chance to start โ€” good, bad or indifferent. I don't need or want an extraordinary life. Just to live each moment, even the painful ones, to the fullest.

Because the gold's already here, hiding in plain sight. Even if it looks a bit grubby round the edges.

๐Ÿ’› Don't lose heart. ๐Ÿ’›
