Affirmations and Your Inner Voice (AKA My Pocket Sha)
So I came across an article on @sciencepost Facebook (yeah, I know โ grain of salt and all that) claiming scientists have just "discovered" that self-talk โ you know, that voice in your head that narrates your life, technically called your "inner dialogue" (I call mine my pocket Sha) โ can physically change your brain for the better.
Well, no shit, Sherlock!
Anyone who practices yoga, meditation, or frankly has a bit of common sense knows the power of positive thoughts. The power of a happy, positive pocket Sha.
Positive affirmations have been practised for centuries through affirmations, chanting, and mindfulness. So is this really a scientific breakthrough? Or is science just catching up?
I've been using positive affirmations and trying to keep a positive inner dialogue for years โ though admittedly, not so much lately whilst I've been very ill. But the practice of listening to your inner voice and using affirmations has been around forever in yoga, mindfulness, and meditation traditions.
Here's the thing, though โ I'm actually pleased that science is validating what many of us already knew. It means the power of affirmations and listening to your inner voice is being recognised as healing, rather than being tagged as "witchy" or "weird."
Which, by the way, are both adjectives that have been used to describe me. And you know what? I don't mind. I own it. Who wants to be a sheep? Who wants to be "just normal"? I'm happy to stay witchy and weird, thanks very much.
I'm glad science has caught up and scanned the human brain to prove what mindful, spiritual, and yes, even WITCHY people already knew. It's just being human.
As the article said: "Scientists have 'discovered' that repeated positive or negative thoughts create measurable changes in brain structure, rewiring neural pathways and influencing mental health, memory, and behaviour."
So here's to your inner voice. Talk kindly to yourself today.
